Project Title: Creating Change
Project Adviser: Koleen Foley
Little people, doing small things, can create big changes. That is what we try to keep in mind each and every day as we study energy and our earth.
We began by exploring the layers of earth and building models of earth. We pretended to drill for oil, investigated ways to conserve non-renewable resources and better ways to care for renewable resources. We studied glaciers and icebergs and brainstormed ways we could help create positive changes in our environment.
We created big books on recycling, energy conservation and composting to share with family and friends, collected food waste from the cafeteria for composting, designed posters for our school and decorated grocery bags for Earth Day. We wanted to share what we had learned with others.
Our Battelle scientist, Mr. Held, helped us understand electrical circuits, conductors and insulators. We built wind-powered vehicles, wrote letters to a wind farm, and studied solar panels.
Our Fifth Grade energy buddies invited us to an Energy Carnival. We were excited to show them what we had learned. We know that the little things we do will have a big impact on protecting our environment and saving energy.
